Kick-off today of the University Theatre Festival: Tribute to Azzelarab El Kaghat

The 7th edition of the Fez International University Theatre Festival (FITUF) opens today, with four days of theatrical performances by Arab and European university troupes.

After a sixth edition exclusively dedicated to the Arab world, this year the theatrical word will be given to universities from Portugal, the Netherlands, France, Palestine, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia, but also from Morocco.

In all, there will be eight theatrical plays by as many university troupes that will tread the boards of the sumptuous Al-Houria cultural complex.

These are "Seductions" from the Faculty of Law of Fez, "Love against barrel" from the Hassan II University of Mohammedia, "Jouda" from the University of Lisbon (Portugal), "We are neither angels nor devils" from the Annajah National University of Nablus in Palestine, "Song of the Doves" from the King Abdulaziz University of Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), "Silent Play" from the University of Jordan in Amman, "Bwing Bwing" from the University of Leiden (Netherlands), and "Disturbances and small details" from the French University of Grenoble.

However, the FITUF is not just theatrical performances. Parallel to the official competition of the festival, debates on various aspects of theatrical art will be led by specialists in the field, such as the student forum "Theatre and Arab Spring", which will take up residence in the "theatre café" space, set up for the occasion.

And as usual, theatre enthusiasts will be able to follow training workshops in directing, body expression, and theatrical writing, under the supervision of seasoned professionals.

The immovable section dedicated to tribute will celebrate, this year, a leading figure of the national theatrical scene, in the person of Azzelarab El Kaghat.

Through the organisation of these activities, it is a question, according to the Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah University, its main initiator, of favouring the establishment of a platform bringing together dozens of student-actors of various nationalities to weave relations of culture and art. The FITUF also aims to be a forum for promoting creativity and education in citizenship, but also human rights among students.
