Towards the establishment of a geographic information system for the economic mapping of the Fes-Boulemane region

The Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services (CCIS) of the Fes-Boulemane region, meeting on Tuesday in Fes in an ordinary session for the month of February, adopted the draft convention relating to the establishment of a geographic information system (GIS) for the economic mapping of the region.

Concluded between the CCIS and the Regional Council, the project tends to gather and analyse the economic data of the region in order to facilitate access to information and decision-making and strengthen the attractiveness of foreign direct investment.

This system, which is part of the Emergence programme, will be carried out with a budget of around 3 million DH, of which the contribution of the Fes-Boulemane CCIS amounts to 2 million DH and the rest will be provided by the Regional Council.

The GIS, as a vector of regional development, aims to identify and anticipate the needs of users, guarantee support services for businesses and weak economic information, and develop the force of proposal and the role of the chamber's council.

Designed as a real-time decision-making tool, the information system gives better visibility of the region, the territory and the possible investment opportunities.

The Chamber also adopted a draft framework convention inherent to the organisation of the Fes Week in Bucharest, scheduled from 27 May to 2 June next.

This convention linking the CCIS and the Fes-Boulemane regional council is part of the efforts aimed at promoting the destination of the region and highlighting its economic, tourist and cultural potential and its civilisational heritage.

The agreement also aims to promote the commercial and investment potential and opportunities that Morocco offers with a view to boosting its attractiveness for foreign direct investment (FDI) and relaunching its national exports and the tourism sector.

According to the terms of the agreement, the Regional Council undertakes to allocate a budget of 600,000 DH for the coverage of part of the expenses of this event and the guarantee of its success, while the Fes-Boulemane CCIS will ensure the organisation, the accompaniment of this economic event, the monitoring of its work and programmes in collaboration with local partners.

This meeting was also marked by the adoption of the CCIS action plan for the year 2013.
