The two earth tremors recorded on Thursday morning in Fes caused fear among the inhabitants of several districts, but without causing any casualties, according to concordant sources.
A very rare occurrence in Fes, these tremors have become the main topic of conversation for residents in workplaces, cafés, or on buses.
In the popular district of Sidi Boujida, several people took to the streets when the earth shook for the first time at 05:29.
It was the worshippers returning from the Al Fajr prayer who were the main witnesses to the scene.
"After performing the Al Fajr prayer in the nearby mosque, I returned home when the walls of my house began to shake," a resident of this district told MAP.
A street cleaner, who was working in front of a bank, made the same observation and stated that several local residents gathered near the Tajemouâti mosque, in the Jnanates district, at the time of the tremor.
The National Centre for Scientific and Technical Research (CNRST) announced that two earth tremors, with magnitudes of 4 and 3.8 on the open Richter scale respectively, were recorded on Thursday morning in the Fes province.
According to the CNRST, the epicentre of the first tremor, which occurred at 05:29, is located in the commune of Aïn Bida, while the second, which took place at 05:42, is in the commune of Agdal, in the city centre.
Local authorities have assured that these tremors did not cause any casualties or material damage.
In the rural commune of Ain Baida, 5 km away on the road to Sefrou, the tremor, despite being of medium intensity, was not felt by the inhabitants.
"We didn't feel anything," a farmer who was filling his tractor with fuel testified to MAP on the spot.
"We sleep like the dead after hard labour in the fields during the day," he explained.
The employee at the Ain Baida petrol station also claims to have "felt or heard nothing".
Decidedly, the Fassis, and especially those in the districts where the earthquakes were most felt, will not soon forget the day of 25 April.
