The "Sufi Nights", organised every evening from 8 to 15 June at Dar Tazi in the heart of the Fes Medina, as part of the Festival of World Sacred Music, offer a journey into the soul. These evenings, where "dikre", "samaa" and "madih" (hymns to Allah and the Prophet Sidna Mohamed) mingle, transport Moroccan and foreign listeners alike to the furthest reaches of Morocco's Sufi chants. Seated on carpets in the magnificent garden of Dar Tazi, the audience savours these good and magical moments with pleasure. Carried by the atmosphere, spectators participate in the Sufi chants with the singers of Tariqa Hassania (Laâyoune), Tariqa Habibia (Taza) and Tariqa Derkaouia (Azemmour), who have performed successively since last Saturday with interpretations imbued with sincere devotion. These nights of "samaa" and "madih" also provide an insight into Islamic culture through the richness and creativity of its artistic and spiritual dimensions, and lift the veil on Sufism, which has always been linked to Moroccan culture, its sacred chants and its popular music that evokes mystical love and introduces Moroccan Sufi brotherhoods that follow religious and esoteric paths known as "tariqa" to pray to God. They continue throughout the nights of the festival with other brotherhoods, notably the Tariqa Touhamia (Fes), the Tariqa of the Hamadcha of Fes, the Tariqa Al Ajibia (Tangier) and the Tariqa Ouazzania, with odes to the glory of the Prophet, proudly perpetuating this centuries-old tradition of "samaa".
