Moroccan cinema of yesterday and tomorrow

Lovers of the 7th art will be served on the occasion of the 19th Fez Moroccan Film Meeting which will be held from 23 to 26 April. Initiated by the Medi Film Creation Morocco Association, in partnership with the Moroccan Cinematographic Centre (CCM) and the urban commune of Fez, this artistic and cultural event tends to give back to cinematographic art the place it deserves in the local and national cultural landscape in a context marked by the massive disappearance of cinemas. "We have the ambition, through this event, to encourage citizens, and especially young people, to take more interest in cinema, an art that clearly contributes to developing the artistic sensitivity of the public and sharpening its critical spirit," specify the organisers.

To meet the expectations of cinephiles, keen to discover new national and international cinematographic experiences, a very rich and varied programme has been concocted for this meeting.

It involves, among other things, the screening of an important selection of short films, Moroccan and foreign, meetings with well-known filmmakers and tribute sessions to personalities who have largely contributed to the enrichment of the national film library. In this context, actor Abderrahim Meniari and actress Zineb Smaiki will be celebrated by the organising committee, with a spotlight on the roles that marked a turning point in their respective careers.

This edition will also see the organisation of two cinematographic competitions. In this context, 23 films will compete for the Fez Short Film Prizes in the national short film and Mediterranean short film categories. On the debate side, cinephiles have an appointment with a round table that will discuss the theme "Moroccan cinema between culture and industry". After having shed light during the previous edition on the situation of cinemas in Morocco "between a glorious past and a not very comforting present", this conference, which will see the participation of illustrious critics and cinematographic researchers, will allow this year to take stock of the 7th art in Morocco and to question its future and the role it plays both at the social and economic level.

It should be noted that master classes (cinema lessons) are also on the menu of this 19th Fez National Film Meeting. On this occasion, professionals and cinema experts will share their profession and their cinematographic experiences with the public in an atmosphere of exchange and discovery.
