Are our universities, supposed to be spaces of knowledge, civility, and tranquillity, so devoid of security? The gravity of the incidents that the Fez-Dher Mehrez university campus experienced last Thursday, which caused the death of a student, Abderahim Hasnaoui, as well as 16 injuries, two of whom are in serious condition, is alarming. Conscious of this exceptional situation, it is a strong signal that government officials sent by their presence at the funeral of the student Abderahim Hasnaoui, which took place on Saturday in the locality of El Jerf, near Errachidia. Thus, the Head of Government Abdelilah Benkirane, the Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Executive Training, Lahcen Daoudi, the Minister Delegate to the Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Executive Training, Soumia Benkhaldoun, as well as deputies and representatives of local authorities attended these funerals. According to local authorities, Abderahim Hasnaoui was killed and two other students injured during clashes that opposed students claiming to be from "Attajdid Tollabi" and "Annahj démocrati Al Qaidi" on Thursday 24 April on the Fez-Dher Mehrez university campus. He had succumbed to his injuries on Friday morning in the intensive care unit of the Hassan II University Hospital Centre, where he had been transported as an emergency. An investigation into these incidents, ordered by the public prosecutor's office, has been entrusted to the judicial police. But according to a statement from the "Attajdid Tollabi" organisation addressed to ALM this Sunday, a deleterious climate marked by threats from a small group of "Annahj démocrati Al Qaidi" has reigned at the university since the announcement of the organisation of a conference scheduled for Thursday, having as its theme "Islamists, Leftists, Democracy" and where deputies and academics Abdelali Hamidine of the PJD, and Hassan Tariq of the USFP, as well as Professor Ahmed Mofid of the Faculty of Law, were to take part. "The tense climate was behind the cancellation and postponement of the conference. Then after the threats, the act was committed on Thursday around noon at the exit of classes when students were surprised by methodical attacks by a small group armed with sabres," notes the said statement.
